All three articles are to be read and completed by Friday, 9/23.

Activity 1
Below are three student opinion articles that relate technology to your every day usage of it. In the link, find the link to the article that discusses the issue. Read through each article to learn more about the opinions and facts behind these current issues among youth today. Begin a Google Doc in your account and name it username.TechnologyandMe and share it with Miss Kitzmiller (mkitzmiller@cypanthers.org) and Mrs. Detwiler (bdetwiler@cypanthers.org). In the Google Doc, speak about each article separately. Be sure to tell me which article it is you are talking about. For each article, write a 1 sentence summary, 2 sentences of facts you found surprising or interesting, and 3 sentences of your own reflection/opinion on the topic.

"Do You Text at the Dinner Table?"
The link that goes to the article "Should You Google at Dinner?" is broken, so use the link provided here.
"Does Your Digital Life Have Side Effects?"
"How Should Educators and Legislators Deal with Minors Who 'Sext?'"

If you are finished, answer the question section that is labeled "Students" at the bottom of the article. Add these answers to your Google Doc.

Activity 2
In your groups, you will work with one article. Two things need to be accomplished in your group.
1) As a group, follow the questions below to make connections to the text. Use the articles as a reference, and pull out specific examples to which you could connect. These connections should be recorded so they will be put on the board. The questions to be answered are:
  • Did you ever have a similar experience? How did you feel? What did you do?
  • How was your situation the same? Different?
  • Did you connect to any of the decisions the people you read about made? How?
  • What feelings did the reading raise? Why?
  • How is your family the same or different from the one you read about?
  • Did you learn anything about yourself by reading about what happened or what people did?

2) As a group, use the knowledge you have gained and the connections you have made to evaluate and judge the topic of your article. You are to come up with a new point of view on the topic, and create a mini poster reflecting that new view. This poster should be a sound display of your understanding of the topic as well as a beneficiary to the reader of the poster. In other words, it should sway your audience to understand and follow your point of view. You can choose the medium of the poster (on the computer or by hand on paper), but it needs to be completed by all of the group members in some way.
